I have spent my life serving this country, and I still believe the American people are our greatest strength. But we cannot afford to sit back and assume someone else will secure our future.

There is too much at stake for complacency. Take your frustrations, your concerns, and your love of country to the ballot box. I voted early. Make your plan and follow through.

Presidential Oath of Office

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, PROTECT and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Article II, Section 1, Clause 8.

Yesterday, I emphasized PRESERVE. Today, I want to call attention to another word in the presidential oath: PROTECT.

The federal oath under 5 U.S.C. § 3331 requires those covered by it to SUPPORT AND DEFEND our Constitution. The presidential oath expressly includes the obligation to PRESERVE and PROTECT it as well.

To PROTECT requires vigilance. It requires recognizing threats to our constitutional freedoms and taking lawful action before those freedoms are lost. It demands judgment, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the limits our Constitution places on government power.

Taking the Oath.

Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 — Presidential Oath of Office — a duly elected President of the United States swears (or affirms) their oath of office, below is that oath:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, PRESERVE, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

I capitalize the word PRESERVE because this oath, unlike others taken by federal officials, is the only one to use the word PRESERVE. The POTUS has a duty to not only protect and defend, but to PRESERVE our constitution. 

Pray that our leadership understands this. I believe America is moving into previously uncharted waters, and our constitution is (will be) tested in the years ahead as maybe only one other time in U.S. history. Can it stand the test of the past of our American experience?

In more than 33 years in uniform, including as Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, I learned that secure supply chains are essential to military readiness. We cannot afford to depend on foreign adversaries for the critical metals that equip our forces.
