One year ago, I published The “Diplomatic Void.”

I warned that adversaries were watching our empty embassies and drawing conclusions. They were right to do so.

Sixteen months into this administration, fewer than 1 in 3 American embassies has a Senate-confirmed Trump ambassador. The Foreign Service has lost more than 20% of its workforce since January 2025.

Moscow, Riyadh, Berlin, Kyiv, Baghdad, and over 100 other strategic capitals sit without a nominee.

While we wait, China sends ambassadors carrying checkbooks and Beijing's instructions. Russia sends operators who have studied us for decades.

We send a chargé. The equivalent of a colonel in a meeting that demands a general, and then we wonder why the room treats us like a colonel.

The Senate hasn't confirmed a Trump Nominee for Ambassador since December 2025.
